This personal project started almost by accident. I was born in Hungary a small Eastern-European country, where traditional embodied garments were still worn by older people on some occasions. As a kid I did not find them attractive. However I liked folktales and songs, the colorful embroidered flowers swirling on shirts and vests, the intricate laces and richly decorated headpieces belonged to an old world that smelled like grandma’s cupboard. Children live in the present and look into the future, they could not care less about the past.
Then as time passed, I got intrigued by the visual world of folk tales, and starred to see folk art in a different light. It is fascinating how some motifs are living on these garments for centuries if not thousand of years. They were shaped by history and societal rules, they speak their own language by colors and shapes, and always rooted deeply in symbolism. They are like a treasure trove that we barely notice now even if it is under our nose.
